Dear Veda,

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. You and Jim had something pretty
special together and it's doubly hard when you lose both your life and work
mate.

Being a pianotuner is a wonderful job for a woman, (do I daresay on this
list, even better than for a man?) You get to work in people's homes at
times that are of personal and emotional importance in their lives. This
opens a world of possibilities of service that are limited only by your
capacity for imagination and empathy.

Neither sex nor age is a barrier to you. (I'm 54) Some customers are just
more comfortable with a woman in their homes. And sometimes, when I have
taken beginners who are older than me on a job in the process of training
them, the customer tends to believe them first because of their white hair!

When I was teaching piano technology at the college, I emphasized with my
students that there are many avenues they could take in this field and that
the hardest part of their learning would be to determine which was what they
most wanted to do. This is the position you are in now. There are many
open doors before you.

I would like to correspond with you in more depth; right now I have a
trainee waiting for me to teach him to install a universal bass string and a
sister in surgery. Please feel free to email me privately or phone (best
times are late evening (9:00pm-12:00pm PDT or 9:00am-11:00am.PDT)

   Regards,
   Diane
