Susan I've used curtain tension rods to make this measurement. They're cheap and are easy to adjust. I flattened and tapered the ends. Place one end in the hole, extend the other end for a snug fit, mark the location of the end of the inside rod on the outside rod. Remove and re-establish your setting, lay it on your stock, mark and cut to length. Before measuring, I usually add a 1"#12 flat head wood screw into the upper hole if there is room that can be turned in or out to make final adjustments easier.
