Hi Ralph,

There's lots of suggestions available to help you to plug / redrill / repair
the old hole(s).

Let me offer a simple alternative that might just work if you need it.  If
you're really having trouble with getting the repairs to hold, it might not
be too hard to move the spring about 1/2 inch or so in one direction or the
other to where you could drill fresh screw holes into fresh wood.

It's just a suggestion.  (There's usually more than one way to skin a cat!)
