I think that is the oxidation that has taken up residence in the felt. Dampening the felt with proteck where the string rides over it will tell if it is in there or not. The CLP doesn't stain the cloth, either. So go try it and let us know if this is where the problem is. I have had more than several pianos respond to this like a dream. Good luck, Ed Foote >
