When finishing a tuning I usually turn the bench with the hinge closest to the piano just so the hinge won't be visible to others seated in the room. I think it looks better. But is the other way more correct, or is it purely personal preference?

Clyde,

I'm not here to answer my own question but, if you're not stuck to it and a bench falls, it will fall in the direction of the hinges. That could mean either a broken pedal or just a small dent in the carpet. Just guessing, though.

Perhaps grand benches should have a lid prop just like the piano.
