Here's the way I like to polish brass hinges: Assuming you have stripped the old lacquer finish from the hinge, take some 0000 steel wool and rub the brass using liberal amounts of any standard brass polish (i.e. Brasso, etc.) as long as it contains a polishing abrasive. Be sure to polish in a consistent direction, no circular movements. Finish polishing with a soft cotton rag. Coat the hinge with clear gloss lacquer. The whole process takes about an hour. The hinge of course will have more of a 'satin' polish to it, but it certainly saves a lot of time.
