Last night I received an email from my best friend's boss's wife, which began with the dreaded words....."I just bought an antique piano at an auction....." While composing a diplomatic response (which I hope will not be answered), I thought of my first nightmare piano. In looking the "nightmare" over, I failed to notice some warped keys......mainly because the whole keyboard was very stiff and dirty. On a recent repair visit, after replacing the action in a spinet, I forgot to reconnect the soft pedal rod and thought of it only after getting home......50 miles round trip....... I researched the archives and found mention of the need for checklists.......but no mention of one being developed. I could certainly benefit from a checklist for evaluating an old piano. Does such an animal exist?
