Terry;
 Conrad has his Spring clearance sale which is held annually in December. :-)

As for "is there a difference"...absolutely there is...one is about the
'capacity' to perform and the other is a 'method' of performance.

  As for ETDs being "crutches" used by those with less ability to perform
aurally......... without a doubt they are in some cases. Also without a
doubt, in my opinion, the use, even ocasionally, of an ETD 'will' make a good
aural tuner even better. For one who listens to what is happening rather
than just 'going through the motions' an ETD will almost force one to listen
more critically even though it may be just to decide who is right...... you
or that danged box! :-) Also the use of an ETD will help one determine the
important nodes to listen to and help one to learn to ignore those of less
importance...........I didn't say that very well but there it is.
 As an aural tuner, who uses an SAT II occasionally, I suppose that would
make me a 'recovering aural tuner'.........but you can't have my danged blue
box!!
My view.
