Jim, Just got back from the warehouse. I did have a Knabe of similar vintage. It is in original condition, bad. It had the same steep dive into the agraffes as the two we are working on have, but it has no counter bearing bars of any sort. The strings leave the pins, cross a cast in bearing bar, (covered with felt), proceed to the edge of the plate, and then dive under the capo bar. My piano only had string cuts in the upper tenor break and no evidence of cuts in the high treble (where I had the counter bearing bar). I am no longer so sure of my decisions I made yesterday about what to do here in regard to felt, using or not the using the bearing bar, making or not making a second bar. Oh, well I guess it is off to the university. Andrew Remillard
