Wally files his to acheive this same basic shape so you are pressing at the center, giving you more expansion from the center rather than squeezing the whole side. I use if for a general softening and have not really done a "precise" voicing with it. I take a pair of small Vice Grips, set the adjustment to get the right amount of squeeze, then go to it. Depending on the hardness of the hammers, I will give two or three squeezes to each. If two, one is above and one below the strike point. If three, one is at the strike point. I will usually have to adjust the screw on the Vice Grips several times during the course of doing the set as it sometimes moves as my hand works the squeezing motion and also the release of the lock. I have also tried taping the screw setting in place to prevent movement, but found that some hammers are slightly wider, so the adjustment will need to be changed.
