Hi Kieth, I have seen an upright of that vintage made in Ottawa, Canada, where the keybed and front legs were held on by large wooden screws, into the sides of the case. It was almost like a drawer fitting in it's cavity. It also had wedges that were knocked out by other wedges secured in the back of the front board. The piano was basically 1/2 size front to back.
