Hi Jerry,

You do not need to remove the action to replace the butt.

You will need a screw holder, the one that has three or four claws
to hold the screw.

Work the butt into position.

Depress the jack away from the butt rail.

Use the rail to get the flange straightened out then slide it into
position.

Release the jack.

Use the screw and holder to move the jack forward and to the side
and insert the screw into it's hole.

Gently turn the screw counter clockwise until you hear or feel it
click into the threads.

Turn the screw clockwise. If it stop within a half turn it is
cross threaded.

Turn it back out and move the screw holder in such a way as to
allow the screw to go in straighter then try again.

Once the screw has been turned in as far as you can take it remove
the screw holder and tighten the screw while spacing the hammer to
it's neighbors.

Use your sense of hearing and touch, your chin should be on the
keys.

Five minutes or less. For me, 2 minutes at most.
