Realistically, if it won't play dependably on 10-12 inches, it's dead. The
volume of air used, cubic feet per minute (CFM) is as important as vacuum
level because if the stack is leaking badly enough, you can move a huge
volume of air through it, pumping like a demon, without producing much vacuum.

Players are nearly as treacherous as politics for the uninitiated. If you
know of a local tech who knows players, I'd recommend hiring him to look at
it with you.
