>Does anyone know right off the top of their heads the amount(s) of vacuum >needed to run an old player piano? > >Players are not my forte, but I was talked into looking at one for a friend. >I just received my vacuum measuring gauge recently and haven't even used it >yet. > >Any response would most likely prove helpful. Thank-you. > >Dave Streit >From as low as five inches (water) and very low CFM for a well rebuilt one, to all the air in the world proving insufficient for a dead one. Realistically, if it won't play dependably on 10-12 inches, it's dead. The volume of air used, cubic feet per minute (CFM) is as important as vacuum level because if the stack is leaking badly enough, you can move a huge volume of air through it, pumping like a demon, without producing much vacuum. Players are nearly as treacherous as politics for the uninitiated. If you know of a local tech who knows players, I'd recommend hiring him to look at it with you. Ron N
