Dave,

Although this will not eliminate or treat your pain, this may help to 
minimize the stress your joints are enduring.  Take a bass hammer and a 
treble hammer.  Have both striking points facing away from each other.  Then 
put the tails together, one on top of the other.  At this point you may wish 
to glue the two pieces together with CA glue, or drill through both and 
insert a hammer shank, etc.  Grab the tool with you pounding hand, treble 
hammer pointing up, and use the bass hammer (extending through the bottom 
end of your palm) as a replacement pounding finger.  You'll find that it 
does lessen the stress on your joints, and you can get strong test blows 
without much effort.  Hope this helps.
