Terry, I've gone through several store bought and home made thumb switches and one foot switch. I figured that they just got a lot of hard use and would not hold up over years. The little black dots ARE the low battery warning. I believe that they indicate that about a half-hour remains. I find that on a cold morning they often are on when I first fire the machine up, but go out after it warms up a bit.
