Owen, I'm jumping in a little late here but I have a couple of observations that I hope will be useful. Having been engaged in the rebuilding of Steinways almost exclusively for the past sixteen years I have seen the "wholesale" value of these instruments rise at an astounding rate. The going rate for the piano that you describe ( actually an "O") on the wholesale market is 8500.00-10.000.00$ Like several others I would be ecstatic over a return to the 3-5000.00$ Steinway! You should be aware that if this was indeed an "L" it would command a couple thou more as the "L" is a more desireable model due to the design changes incorporated as the replacement for the "O". I have done complete jobs on both models over the years and am firmly in the "L" camp as I feel that the "L" ends up being a better example when finished. Bear in mind that we are still talking about Steinways here. At my shop the going rate for a complete rebuild; including soundboard would be $13.500.00-$15.000.00. If it was a spec piano it would command a sale price of $30.000.00. Hope this helps! Rod Pierce Central Illinois
