Speaking of Hammer Shanks... there was a really good article in the European this quarter about upright hammershanks. The article briefly sketches why shanks are sorted for acoustic properties, how they are sorted, and compares a few wood sorts for acoustical properties in this regard. A short and easy to understand explanation of some simple math modeling for these acoustics makes the explanation as to why birch, and especially finish ski birch is the primary choice for hammer shanks over here. Brief comparisons are made to hornbeam, maple, and white birch as well. If you can get ahold of a copy its well worth reading. -- Richard Brekne RPT, N.P.T.F.
