There was a formula that could be used to determine if a
splice would fail.  Had to do with the diameter of the
string and the tension on the core.  

Splices do fail, especially if I do them, but keep trying.

I have often peeled up to 5 mm of wrap off so I had room to
make a splice in the speaking length.  If it is done well
the splice is inaudible.
