Greetings, 
    I always splice if there is enough wire.  Not only is more economical, it 
is a more stable repair than a new string,  and it doesn't change the sound 
of the note as a  new string will.  It is also a way to demonstrate 
expertise.  
     Approx. 10 minutes on the outside.  You need a new piece of wire, 
cutters, small visegrips, dummy pin, T-hammer, and string lifter.
