Hi Paul. My point with the bellywork not being addressed is that, as I =
understood it, your anticipated improvements did not include belly work =
as it had already been done. Also, with reference to value assessed to =
current condition, even though "belly work" was done 15 years ago - that =
leaves little value to the stringing, and leaves questions about whether =
the bridges were properly recapped, and was the soundboard replaced? =
Unfortunately, the standard practice among the large number of =
"rebuilders" is to do the minimum (strings, hammers and refinish) and =
charge the maximum ($60,000). Assuming that this instrument has its =
original soundboard and bridges, to reach its potential and to really =
qualify for the $60,000 price tag, the instrument needs a new action, =
AND a new belly (board, bridge caps, rim repairs, framing repairs, =
etc.).

Wish it were mine!  :-)

  The original post did cover the belly work, but not in detail to save =
some time. It was done about 15 years ago under the guidance of a =
reputable tech in the area. So, it passes muster although the cosmetics =
are a little lacking. Budget constraints may have been a factor then as =
they are now.

    The original post did not address belly work, so either did I. Your =
$20 - $30 thousand is right-on, just depends on how much they try and =
salvage. Your $60 grand price on a complete rebuild (new board, action, =
etc. - all, of course, done properly) is right there also. My info is =
figure about 2/3 new price. And is it worth it? THE ONLY WAY TO GO! The =
only way to get a new Steinway that isn't goofed up! (Unless of course, =
you are real lucky.)   ;-)

and I do try to keep up on these things.I thought your assesment of the =
the situation was right on many cases i.e the salvage value and starting =
over from scratch Big DITTOS.A world class instrument deserves a first =
class REDOO!Considering 88 grand being the cost of a new one It is my =
opinion that a Stwy D s value after such a job could easily fetch 60 =
thousand or more assuming that its drop dead gorgeous tonally and =
musically.So it really doesnt matter to an extent what the cost is =
except someone has to pay the bill . The other Major factor in all of =
this is the market your dealing in .Something is worth what the local =
market will bear but considering web page sales I believe you could =
reach out and find clients.A complete rest. as described above I mean =
complete with belly work ,back action, new action (Not a  stanwood redo =
but excellent thorough job plus a first rate finish will price out =
between 2o and 30 thousnd depending who and where you have the work =
done.Factor in your salvage cost and, well you do the math. It is still =
worth the trouble.An awesome piano for HALF the price of new =
.Hummmm.Makes sense to me.Even if you tack on new key sticks and other =
action designing etc. it still feasable dont you think.Crunch your other =
senarios through this filter and tell me if I,m in the ballpark or =
