Practical pitch changing

Don and others
I mute the entire piano. Then, working with the center or unmuted string,
quickly raise or lower the pitch as needed and immediately move to the muted
strings of that note and move the pin about as much as the open one-"deaf
tuning" the rest of the unison. I move very fast, approximating the pitch
and making sure my wrench squarely hits the next pin. I do not pull any
mutes. The whole process of muting and pitch correction takes less than 10
minutes. Its pleasing to find how many "deaf tuned" strings that are near
perfect. I use this technique when only a section of the piano needs pitch
correction as stated by some one in a previous post. It really speeds up the
floor tunings.
