I had super excellent results by following the schedule below:

- Clean plate
- Fill any divots etc. with most any filler - even common wood filler
- Sand as needed, finishing off with about 400 grit (you really do not have
to sand lots)
- Spray with automotive-type grey primer (spray can from auto store)
- Sand with 400 grit dry, vacuum, wipe down
- Apply two to three coats of "Behlen Piano Gold Aerosol" laquer (spray can
from Pianotec)
Let dry between coats - if you don't and then apply too much, the
metalic stuff starts swirling into yucky patterns and you will NOT like
that. Sand between coats only if you get junk on it.
- Apply two coats "Behlen Clear Gloss Aerosol" laquer (spray can from
Pianotec).
You could also use the satin sheen if you prefer.
- Lastly, stand back and go WO-AH. WOW is that gorgeous - and super easy.
