Which ETD?

Doug,

A The most relevant advice about ETD's would come from someone who would
have tried them all, which is not my case. I know very little about the
Sight-O-Tuner and next to nothing about TuneLab, Yamaha's PT-100 and the
Verituner. I have been using an AccuTuner II for five years before I
switched to RCT.

I really liked the SAT which I still consider as being an awesome machine.
There are MANY differences though between the two devices and I will only
point out one of them.

Talking about the tuning generating system alone, the SAT uses FAC and RCT
uses Chameleon 2. FAC calculation uses only 3 partials, the lowest
fundamental being *F3*. Ch2 uses 19 partials, the lowest fundamental being
*A1*.

I would say that the most critical difference is there. The main problem I
found with FAC is that there is no sampling made below F3, where you
actually get most of the tenor breaks. It means that all the tuning curves
made in the bass section with FAC are based on pure assumption. So, it has
to be assumed that all pianos have to behave acoustically in the same way in
that section, no matter how big or small, how bad or good, how old or new,
how standard or peculiar the instrument is - which is unfortunately not the
case.

That is probably why I have regularly met pianos where FAC tuning would not
quite fit in the bass, if not even in the temperament octave as it happened
once in a while.

I have been using RCT for four years now and still to this day, I have not
met a piano yet on which the tunings were not at least quite good, including
the PSO's on which FAC tunings had not been able to do the job.

But I still have to try the other ETD's.
