Toward the beginning of this time, there were also a lot of meantones in practise, and toward the end of this period, ET began its most rapid advancement to universal acceptance. Any keyboard work by any composer before, say, 1850, should be regarded as most appropriately served by an unequal temperament, and the substitution of ET should be done with some care. Between 1850 and 1900, the temperament decision should be made by listening, there are some pieces of Debussy and Ravel that I much prefer in ET. Mozart and Beethoven, otoh, get tedious in a hurry on ET. Regards,
