Terry asked about a basic book on historical temperaments, how they
developed etc.
The following might do:  "Intervals, Scales and Temperaments - An
Introduction To The Study of Musical Intonation", by Llewellyn S. Lloyd and
Hugh Boyle.  Sorry I don't have publishers info to hand. Available from
Heckschers piano supplies in UK.
