Dear Richard,
My interpretation of the point of Newton's comments is that you should
diplomatically initiate a policy with the appropriate person (Music Dept.
chairman, dean or whoever negotiates your contract) that any requests for
variation from A440 (or whatever you can nail down as your local standard) will
require the equivalent of four tunings: a pitch raise, a fine tuning, and a
pitch lowering and fine tuning back to A440. Either the department will
compensate you further, or they will understand that there will be four fewer
pianos which will be tuned during that semester.
Get a clear understanding and policy agreement with The Boss, and refer all
requests for differnt pitches to The Department Policy.
Best wishes,
Patrick Draine
