My fix for this has always been to cut the wire in back of the break and if the
plug has not been damaged, just unsolder the old wires and resolder the trimmed
off old wires. Shielded wire would work but is not necessary. If your cable
gets too short, you can take the foot switch apart and replace the cable
completely with or without a new plug. Done it many times.
