I'll have to try this variation, Newt. I've been using the crawl under method (a.k.a. the "backwards" or "let's have a look at this thing" approach). For clarity, this places my head under or between the beams and I'm looking at where the lyre braces -will- be. From this position, I use my feet under the pedal box as 'jacks' while lining things up. That frees up one hand for lyre braces, the other hand for engaging the lock/plate, the other hand for... Actually, your method also prevents another problem I have when crawling under grands for whatever reason... the over-powering urge to take a nap.
