Carl,

Why would new Mapes strings eventually
>suffer the same fate? I have suspected structural problems, but have
>not found anything so far.

I've got 23 Yamahas here ranging from 1972 to 1998, and another 15 or 20 in
my private clientele. Made in Michigan, Georgia or Japan - the only "dead"
bass strings I've found were lying in the bottom of the consoles after
breaking at the upper bridge. No tubbies yet.
