Hydrogen peroxide, two hydrogen and two oxygen, is unstable and breaks
down to free oxygen and water.  It is the free oxygen that does the
work.  For a complete break down a catalyst is required, in this case
it is platinum.

This reaction action is familiar to contact lens wearers.
