I have occassionally found Yamahas to have "tubby" bass strings, but only in older examples (15-25 years old) and most commonly in the imported grey pianos. This problem does sound like an outside influence of some sort, (check for staining of any kind, even hand or finger marks) as others have already suggested. The one suggestion I can make is to replace the strings ( and I prepare for the flaming now) but a nice set of hand made strings adds a depth I have yet to hear from factory strings ......it depends on your string maker. We only have one commercial string maker here in Australia, fortunately he is very good, open minded and flexible. This instrument is about 5 years old. It plays real nice and the sound is excellent except for the bass strings. They are "dead". The owner said to me that this a normal thing for a Yamaha grand. My question to you all: is this true?? Second question: is a set of new bass strings a solution?? Or is it just necessary to put new bass strings every 10 years?? lm looking forward for your response:) Thanks, Wim Vermeyen Wim's Piano Service Ekeren, Belgium wim.debby@village.uunet.be
