Steinway pin block removal

S^S blocks are doweled front sides and the obvious ones you can see.

They have to be cut out, unless you know exactly where the dowels are
and drill through them. Then the block can be knocked out. Short of
knowing where they are they have to be cut.

Some have used a fly cutter in a 1/2" route to cut through the block
near the stretcher then cut front to back with a normal saw, knock out
the block and use a chisel to clean up the remainder of the lock.

Before you remove the plate drill two tiny, 1/16" holes, one in the
bass and one in the treble.. to you can relocate the plate AND the new
block exactly. After removing the plate measure from the stretcher to
the center of each hole and from the sides to each hole, all at 90
degrees from their closes surface, stretcher or side, and write them
measurements on the keybed to they cannot be lost.

After removing the old block and fitting the new one to the plate you
can drill through the plate into the new block. Remove it from the
plate and layout the cut lines as measured from the original holes in
the old block and cut the block out to match those lines.

Drop the block into place and glue in to all surfaces then dowel down
into the rasten.

Hope this helps.
