In over 30 years I've still not found any consensus on this. Technicians and factories still seem to be about evenly divided. My personal preference is to install the leather so that the nap lies toward the hammer. The idea being that there is much more force driving the jack out away from the knuckle than there is resetting it as the mechanism returns to rest. If the clearance is set a bit tight and the spring is a bit loose, the jack needs all the help it can get. In truth, of course, after a few thousand cycles it really doesn't matter at all. -- ddf --------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard Brekne <richardb@c2i.net> To: <pianotech@ptg.org> Sent: Thursday, December 02, 1999 1:15 AM Subject: Re: Knuckles > Many thanks Lloyd.
