Try rotating the spring 20 to 45 degrees a couple of time.

The tubing solution sounds good except that often these springs are
compressed to next to nothing and the tubing could cause more problems
than it solves.  Check spring compression amount before doing this
one.

I have used string and dental floss braided up and down the coils
which has worked well.
