  I am not a metalurgist so the following is just opinion...........
There is nothing inherent in the 'process' of sand casting that makes a 
"better" plate than with any other method.  Whether there is or not, 
inherently, in the chemical/molecular structure of the poured 'material' 
which forms the plate, I don't know.  Though I agree with the comments that V 
pro plates 'seem' to be easier to drill than a typical sand cast plate.

  As to what makes a "good plate"?
1. A material strong enough to withstand the scale tensions applied to it.
2. A material that is strong enough not to flex in rather thin sections.
3. A material that is physically/acoustically 'neutral' to the tone 
production process or has resonance in 'a' correct range so as to be a 
compliment to the tone production process.  
4. A material that is realtively stable during temp changes.

Hopefully others will add to or take away from this list..........
