I generally leave it protruding enough to give a kink.  The becket hole is
so large compared with the diameter of the wire (particularly when you get
to the top of the 4' where you could have .007") that it gives a little
insurance against pulling through. Not necessarily tucking under windings.
Then all you have to worry about is the knot at the other end slipping - and
they will if you are sloppy making them.
