John,
I have done this, not exactly in the way you suggest.
I used a handscanner and edited the picture with Photoshop.
It is lost of work, because you have to filter out all the background colors
(the wood fibres), scratshes and dirt.
So it could be a lot easier and cheaper to follow Roberts suggestion.
But it can be fun to do it yourself.
In the past I have done this with a conventional camera and an orthochrome
film (Agfa Ortho). Printed the picture on high contrast paper. Had to use a
lot of tipex to correct the print.
I discovered that if you wet the decal with terpentine just before you take
the picture, the contrast is much better (the black gets blacker), also when
you use a handscanner.
And the best light to use is direct sunlight. (It is free:-)
