Bass String Scale

While we are on bass strings, would someone comment on Schaff strings
and Sal Augustino strings (he use to work for Hale or Tuners Supply Co.
in Mass).  

I tryed Isaac strings years ago ( 4 sets) and two sets were outstanding,
the other two were not (even though I gave him the information he
wanted).  His strings were quite expensive and Isaac was not always a
pleasant man to deal with. 

I tryed two sets of his hammers, too which were like marshmellows.  It
seemed like I had to pour gallens of lacquer on them to get any tone at
all.  

Maybe all of this has changed now and I will have to give him another
try.
