Hi Terry,

You are hearing longitudinal beats from the torque in the string, caused
by overturning it.  We go to great lengths to advise against torquing
plain wire during installation and then say that bass strings should be
turned.  It is true that a small amount of core torque will not cause a
problem, but a properly made bass string needs no more than a half turn,
if that.

Having said that, you certainly didn't ruin the strings, because they
must have been at least partly dead to begin with.  Since you already
put new plain wire, new bass strings will more than redeem their cost in
the performance and appearance value of the instrument.
