No such animal as "ridged". Just relatively difficult to compress or bend or stretch. I do not know how much compression occurs. The next time you remove a set of bass strings measure the middle and treble section. Remove the strings and remeasure then graph the differences between the two. The resultant graph will provide dramatic proof.
