To test for a pure 4th, find the note which is a M3 below the bottom note. If that M3 beats the same as the M6 formed between the test note and the top note, the 4th is pure. If the M6th is faster, the 4th is tempered widely, is it is slower, the 4th is narrow. In ET, you are looking for a very slight but perceptible difference.
