When we were living at our former address, the garage/shop did not have any
support structures strong enough except for the header above the garage door.
I drilled up through the bottom and sides, inserted an eye bolt and attached
my chain hoist to it. Dry weather was a must because part of the piano was
outside. For removing the plate, I use adjustable belts. When all is level,
my wife (who is much smaller than me) and I can remove or install a plate
easily. It is better to have an assistant so the plate will not bang the
inside of the case, causing more touch up to be done. Now that I am in the
planning stages of building a new shop on our property, I am looking at a
cherry picker hoist that can be folded for storage.
