Marking the original position of a plate prior to removal is important for several reasons, not the least of which is for exacting duplication of the side bearing on bridge pins. Theoretically, you would be correct in that there are adequate screwholes to generally align a plate to its former position; however, one does not know how much "play" there is in the plate placement until after it is removed, so placing it back with a slight overall angle shift relative to bridge pins can cause a side bearing problem. Another good reason for measuring the exact placement of a plate prior to its removal is string positioning ( if the plate has agraffes). Theoretically, string position could be off by as much as 1/8" of an inch from original, depending again on the angel change of plate placement. Anyone have something to add? There must be other reasons, too, which I have not mentioned. Doug Oliver's Twist Piano Service Douglas A. Oliver, Technician daoliver@cyberportal.net 133 Vista Heights Tilton, NH 03276 (603)286-8279
