True, and I suspect that the reason is when a string breaks, it only affects
one unison.
But you aren't talking about a reasonable quality grand here... 

More like a Gulbransen spinet with hitch pins in the tenor section which
_could_ be loop and tie, but really has a loop between unisons. Some are a
couple of inches long due to the fanning of the strings.  

Again, looking closely at the plate by the hitchpins can usually reveal the
marks. 
Two parallel marks - loop
Two convergent      - tie
One straight            - ½ of two pin loop.
