Apart from the graphite grunge, what is the overall condition of these knuckles? Flattened on the bottom? Indentations where it had been resting on the jack tops and balancier windows? In other words, are they bad enough to warrant replacement? In the meantime, you might try scruffing them with a dry metal-bristle brush, brass or steel. I'm not wild over the use of toluene (nasty stuff) and then possibly caking them up again with other lubricants. Just some thoughts --- Z!
