Shellac finishes

Ric,
A quick finish can be accomplished with linseed oil and shellac.
I've done a studio upright this way, finished in a morning.

Once the surface is ready to accept finish apply a generous coat
of linseed oil followed by a rag dripped in shellac. Rub the area until
the shellac takes. Small areas (1' or so) can only be done. It has
been at least ten years since I did this so details of the procedure
escape me.

A nice open pore finish can be done quickly. Probably even a second
or third coat, I can't recall. My goal for that project was for a quick,
one coat.
