One does not have to use a key/caul press,
but if you use a thick cloth then it will resist
taking a bend at the shoulder.

If the caul were so tight as to allow for this then
you may have  a gap problem once the caul is removed.

I am not familiar with plastic cauls and my preference
is to insert a heated caul to aid in the compression set.
