Clementi was still playing the harpsichord, but was beginning to get into the new fortepianos. >2. When was the Civil war from and to? 1860-1865. Though here in Virginia, they still call it "The Recent Unpleasantness". In 1860, Steinway was overstringing its grands, far ahead of the competition. Gottschalk was playing in the states again (on Chickerings, having sold off his Pleyel, and later his Erard) after wowing France and Spain. Lincoln was President, and my Chickering grand (still awaiting restoration in my too long queue) was born in 1864, the same year Stephen Foster wrote "Beautiful Dreamer".
