1st piano made in America? >1823 by Chickering. > >dave > >_______________________________________________ > >David M. Porritt, RPT >Meadows School of the Arts >Southern Methodist University >Dallas, Texas >_______________________________________________ > I thought that the first pianos in American were made back in the 18th century. The Pierce atlas (8th edition) has a photo on page 49 from the Smithsonian, saying "This is probably the first upright piano made in American by John Isaac Hawkins, Philadelphia 1801." Check "Sellers, John, Philadelphia, Pa. 1791" in the atlas. Very small square with a knee pedal. I imagine there were some before that. Experts? Susan Susan Kline P.O.
