Phil,
Service calls similar to the one you mentioned should go through
the dealer. That way the dealer can inform the customer what is
covered by the warranty. Then by having the dealer call you, it
places him in the position of hiring you. 
If a customer calls "out of the blue' they are liable for any and all repairs
and are responsible for reimbursements from the dealer/man'f'r.

You are paid to be a service technician, you do not receive compensation
for being a middle-man even though it usually ends up that way. So
anything to keep you on the service end lightens your load.
